About TDSB

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) was created on January 1, 1998 following the amalgamation of seven individual Boards of Education. TDSB serves almost 1.4 million electors of the City of Toronto. They are the largest school Board in Canada and among the largest in North America with over 550 schools that deliver quality education to our students at the elementary, intermediate, and secondary levels.

The installation

The council chambers at TDSB went through a major renovation in 2003 and was upgraded to a state of the art and high profile audiovisual facility that is used for regular City councilor and trustee meetings.

The school district needed an environment that would allow each councilor and/or trustee to speak in addition to having their individual computer signals projected onto one of two screens at the front of the room. We installed two special Mitsubishi projectors with long throw lens to project onto the dual projection screens. Around the main boardroom table, councilors can speak using the AKG gooseneck microphone system which is installed in conjunction with a Clearone audio conferencing system with enhanced echo and noise cancellation.

Altinex table top boxes at each chair position allow the attendee to connect his/her laptop and participate in the meeting. Through a central Crestron control system at the head of the table, the meeting chair has the capability to select each individual attendee's computer signal and project onto the screen. Volume can also be controlled from the system as well.

An integrated Polycom videoconferencing system together with multiple Elmo PTC 200 cameras allow for distance meetings to occur. The Elmo cameras are specially programmed to pick up sound and rotate to whoever is speaking and this image is projected on the dual screens at all times.

The Blonder tongue audio / video modulator device sends the feed from the cameras and audio system to overflow rooms in the office cafeteria and meeting rooms adjacent to the council chamber. In addition, the modulator sends the audio feed to the press media room nearby where reporters can gain access to the live audio feed for recording purposes.
