About Pearson International Airport
Pearson International Airport is Canadas busiest airport. In 2005, it was ranked 29th among the world's busiest airports handling 29.9 million passengers. Terminal 3 initially opened in 1991.
Digital Signage Solutions
Highly visible digital signage at airports has become essential to ensure up-to-the-minute information for travelers. This was the challenge the Pearson International Airport in Toronto faced when the Terminal 3 complex opened more than 150 new check-in counters to accommodate over 20 different airline carriers.
As air-line carriers do not necessarily require permanent check-in counters, the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTTA) needed to provide a sophisticated digital signage system to support shared counter space with the flexibility to accommodate flight schedules.
To meet the challenge, SITA, a leading provider of global telecommunications and information solutions to the air transport industry, developed and customized a fully integrated and highly efficient digital signage solution for the Toronto airport.
At the time, no other airport in North America had previously implemented this kind of digital signage solution on the scale proposed for Terminal 3 so SITA turned to a division of Advanced Presentation Solutions (APS) and NEC Technologies to help bring everything together in a single digital signage solution.
Digital Display Requirements
Selecting the right plasma screen for digital signage in a spacious and light area, such as an airport terminal, was critical for many reasons:
- The display screens had to be clear and bright and cope with the changes in light throughout the day
- As signage, the actual plasma screens needed to be viewed easily from different angles
- The screen size needed to be large enough to be seen, yet remain lightweight
- The plasma screen needed to be easy-to-install yet flexible to allow for maintenance.
After much testing and an extensive evaluation of several brands of plasma display screens, SITA and Advanced Presentation Solutions recommended the NEC PlasmaSync 42" public display monitor.
The Result
Due to the collaborative effort of Advanced Presentation Solutions, SITA and NEC Technologies, a full digital signage and audio visual solution was provided including the display plasma screens, bespoke computers mounted to the back of each screen, as well as unique signage software all designed to meet the Toronto International Airport's Terminal 3 requirements.
With the success of this digital display installation, plans are underway to install up to 300 more NEC plasma displays in Terminal 3, with future plans to implement these signage displays throughout Pearson International Airport.
