About Acklands Grainger

Acklands was founded in Winnipeg in 1889 by Dudley Ackland. At that time, the Company was a pioneer in manufacturing and supplying wooden goods for various end uses. In 1996, Acklands was purchased by Grainger, a publicly traded company and the largest industrial distributor in North America with current annual sales of nearly $6 billion. Acklands-Grainger has grown to become Canada's largest distributor of industrial, fleet and safety products. Our parent company, Grainger, is the industry leader in industrial distribution in the U.S. With headquarters in Richmond Hill, Ontario, 155 branches across Canada, 5 distribution centres and more than 2,000 dedicated employees, Acklands-Grainger continues to secure its leadership position by working to anticipate and satisfy the needs of our more than 65,000 active customers.

The installation

Advanced is pleased to have been a key partner with Acklands Granger over the past few years providing complete audiovisual services for boardrooms and training rooms across the country. Projects have ranged from the design of the IT demonstration room featuring 3 Hitachi 55' plasma displays and Omnivex digital signage software to multiple videoconferencing installations taking place in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Richmond Hill. When Acklands outgrew their existing facility and moved into the new Richmond Hill site, Advanced assisted with the deinstallation of audiovisual equipment and reinstall in the new location including the President's boardroom.

About University of Toronto

Established in 1827, the University of Toronto is Canada's largest university and is recognized as a global leader in research and teaching. In 2008-2009, there were over 70,000 students in U of T’s 3 campuses, 50,000 of which were studying at its main campus in downtown Toronto. U of T's distinguished faculty, institutional record of groundbreaking scholarship and wealth of innovative academic opportunities continually attract outstanding students and academics from around the world.

The installation

Kruger Hall is a large hall measuring approximately 58’ long by 50’ wide and 20’ to the peaked roof. Presently the room is a general meeting room for students to gather in for study purposes. It was the intention of the University to renovate the space to accommodate special events and student lounge use and configure the space for various sizes of groups. The 2 guiding principles when creating the A/V system for this space were ease-of-use/user friendliness and maintaining a low overall cost using the most economical products that will do the job.

Main Event Space

The main hall has two dividing walls enabling the space to be separated in three, two or one sections depending on the size of the event. A large draper projection screen was installed on the east wall for presentations. Presentation images are projected from an NEC ceiling mounted projector that is fixed to the ceiling on a Draper motorized lift. The projector can be raised above the operating height when not in use but the main purpose of the lift is to lower the projector to ground level for service and lamp replacement.

The system is also equipped with a Biamp digital audio processor to control audio signals and matrix them to specific areas of the space that are being used for the events taking place. Audio signals from the presentation system and voice support are processed through the d.a.p. and connected to Biamp power amplifiers that drive the room’s TOA speaker system.

A portable custom lectern was provided for presenters. The lectern has the facility to connect a laptop to the system and a Crestron control touch panel on the lectern allows the presenter to control all aspects of the audio visual presentation. In addition, the room environment can be controlled including lighting and motorized blinds.

To top it off, a large NEC 65” flat panel LCD monitor was mounted on the side wall that will be used to display either U of T branded digital signage or live TV.

Lounge Space

The lounge space was equipped with a large NEC 65” LCD mounted on the wall to enable the room to be used for small presentations or display the digital cable or satellite TV feed. A TOA audio system with ceiling mounted speakers was set up to support the presentations and a wireless mic was added for voice lift. An economical Crestron control system was also installed to control all facets of the AV system.
